Atherosclerosis is one of those health conditions that quietly develops in the background, often without any obvious symptoms, until it turns into something much more serious. It’s a condition where the arteries the blood vessels responsible for carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body start to narrow and harden due to a buildup of plaque. This plaque is made up of fats, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. Over time, it restricts blood flow and can lead to life-threatening complications like heart attacks, strokes, or even the need for limb amputation.

What makes atherosclerosis particularly dangerous is how silently it progresses. Most people don’t realize there’s a problem until symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or leg pain while walking start to appear and by then, the arteries may already be significantly blocked. The condition can affect arteries in the heart, brain, kidneys, and legs, making it a full-body concern.

The good news is that atherosclerosis is both preventable and manageable. It all begins with lifestyle changes something we all can work on. Eating a balanced, low-fat diet, staying physically active, quitting smoking, managing stress, and keeping conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure under control can make a huge difference.

In cases where the condition has advanced, there are effective treatment options like medications to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and vascular procedures such as angioplasty, stenting, or bypass surgery to restore proper blood flow. The key takeaway here is awareness.

Atherosclerosis doesn’t wait for symptoms to show so we shouldn’t wait to take care of our vascular health. Regular checkups, especially if you have risk factors, can help detect issues early and prevent serious complications later on. Taking care of our arteries is taking care of our future. Let’s not ignore the signs our body might be silently giving us. Prevention, timely intervention, and a proactive approach to health can go a long way.

Taking Control of Atherosclerosis: Awareness and Action

As a member of the Vascular Society Of India , I’m committed to spreading awareness about atherosclerosis, a condition where plaque builds up in the arteries, leading to serious health risks. To further this mission, we’re organizing an Awareness Week from August 4th to 9th, with the goal of promoting early detection, prevention, and treatment.

Let’s work together to take control of atherosclerosis and promote heart health. By spreading awareness and promoting early detection and prevention, we can reduce the burden of this condition and improve overall health outcomes.
