An evening of musical brilliance and dance elegance at Tilak Smarak Mandir
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], 14th July 2025: The prestigious Swar Malhar Festival, organized by Swar Jhankar at Tilak Smarak Mandir, witnessed a captivating confluence of Indian classical music and dance on Saturday, 12th July. The audience was treated to an unforgettable evening graced by the soulful artistry of Dr. Bipul Kumar Ray on Santoor.
The second half of the concert featured Dr. Bipul Kumar Ray, the acclaimed Santoor exponent from Delhi. His rendition of Raga Megh was a meditative journey that beautifully captured the romantic and monsoon essence of the raga. Beginning with a deeply expressive alap, jor, and jhala, he proceeded to present three captivating compositions — the first in Jhaptaal, the second in madhya laya Teentaal, and the third in drut Teentaal. Each piece showcased his intricate layakari, powerful chand, rich tonal texture, and aesthetic depth of the raga. The recital concluded with a soulful dhun in Mishra Kafi, which left the audience in a state of musical bliss. His deep connection with the audience was evident throughout the performance.
He was accompanied on tabla by Onkar Todkar, whose sensitive, crisp, and energetic accompaniment elevated the entire experience. A disciple of tabla virtuoso Pt. Yogesh Samsi, Onkar’s rhythmic command and musical synergy with the Santoor drew wide appreciation.
Dr. Ray is a senior disciple of Padmashree Pt. Bhajan Sopori of the Sufiyana Gharana, an A-grade artist of All India Radio, and an empanelled artist in the Outstanding Category with the Ministry of Culture. He has performed extensively across India’s leading classical music festivals and has represented the country internationally as Guest of Honour in countries like Qatar, Peru, and Venezuela, in addition to performances in over 15 countries worldwide.
His acclaimed albums — “String and Strokes,” “The Sky,” and “Odyssey of Santoor” — are available across all major digital platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, JioSaavn, and YouTube. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Bihar Kala Puraskar (Ustad Bismillah Khan Puraskar) for his outstanding contribution to Indian classical music.
Earlier in the evening, the audience was enthralled by soulful vocal performances by Nisha Kulkarni and Manu Srivastava, whose brilliant and melodious renditions were met with heartfelt applause. Their expressive command over melody and emotion brought depth and spiritual richness to the evening.
Adding to the grandeur was a mesmerizing Kathak performance by Sharvari Jamenis, whose graceful movements, intricate footwork, and expressive abhinaya brought the stage alive and captivated the audience.
The evening stood as a sublime celebration of India’s rich classical heritage — a perfect harmony of melody, rhythm, and movement — that left the audience deeply moved and culturally enriched.
