The Kadambari School of Odissi Dance hosted its annual Kadambari Utsav 2025 on August 31st, offering a feast of Indian classical dance that celebrated tradition with refreshing vitality. The festival, marked by discipline, artistry, and cultural richness, reaffirmed its place as a vibrant platform for nurturing the classical arts.
The morning opened on an auspicious note with a graceful Mangalacharan, setting the spiritual tone for the day. This was followed by precise Chowka steppings and a hymn invoking Goddess Lakshmi, both marked by clarity of form and devotion. Pieces like Sthayi, choreographed by Guru Pankaj Charan Das, and Srita Kamala from the Geeta Govinda exemplified the elegance of Odissi, while the poise of the youngest dancers, some barely six, reflected the school’s careful training and commitment to the future of the form.
Adding variety to the program, Rekha Satish of Nrutyankura Foundation and her students presented a spirited Kuchipudi recital. Beginning with a devotional Ganesh Stuti and followed by Suryaashtakam, the dancers stunned with sculpted imagery and rhythmic grace. The finale, Narayana Theertha Tarangam, executed on a brass plate, highlighted the kinetic brilliance of Kuchipudi, leaving the audience in awe of both skill and tradition.
The festival’s emotive peak came through Sudip Kumar Ghosh, the renowned Manipuri exponent, whose rendition of Hari Riha from Chandana Charchita and Amrit Wakya was deeply moving. With restrained intensity and subtle abhinaya, he transported the audience to Vrindavan’s lyrical world of Krishna and the gopis, creating moments of quiet transcendence.
The undisputed highlight of the Utsav was the performance of Pallavi by Karishma Ahuja, whose dance struck a rare balance between delicacy and power. With precision in technique seamlessly married to artistic expression, she not only inspired young aspirants in the audience but also stood out as the driving force behind the event’s flawless organization. Her efforts in curating such a diverse and high-quality showcase deserve equal praise alongside her artistry. Though the festival left audiences enchanted, the addition of live music and smoother transitions between the segments would have elevated the experience even further, allowing each performance to flow into the next with enhanced cohesion. Nevertheless, Kadambari Utsav 2025 emerged as a celebration of devotion, skill, and cultural heritage, leaving behind resonances of beauty that lingered long after the final bow.
