In a groundbreaking move set to redefine Mumbai’s urban landscape, Ketan Shah, Managing Director of Ravi Group, today unveiled “GreenCity Mumbai,” an ambitious eco-friendly development project that aims to transform a 100-acre plot in the city’s eastern suburbs into a model of sustainable urban living.
Speaking at a press conference held at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Shah outlined the vision behind this ₹5,000 crore initiative. “GreenCity Mumbai is not just another real estate project; it’s our commitment to creating a sustainable future for our city,” Shah explained. “We’re reimagining urban living to ensure that Mumbai remains a world-class city while addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our time.”
The GreenCity Mumbai project is designed to be a self-sustaining community that will house 5,000 families in a mix of apartments and townhouses. The development will feature a range of innovative eco-friendly technologies and design elements. Solar panels and wind turbines will generate 80% of the community’s energy needs, while a state-of-the-art water recycling system will reduce freshwater consumption by 60%. The project will also include 20 acres of green spaces, including parks, community gardens, and vertical forests integrated into building designs.
“We’re not just building homes; we’re creating an ecosystem,” Shah emphasized. “GreenCity Mumbai will demonstrate how urban development can coexist harmoniously with nature.”
The project goes beyond environmental sustainability, incorporating social sustainability as well. Twenty percent of the housing units will be allocated for affordable housing, ensuring a diverse and inclusive community. The development will also include a skills training center, focusing on green jobs to empower local youth and support the transition to a sustainable economy.
Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray, present at the launch, praised the initiative: “Mr. Shah and Ravi Group’s vision for GreenCity Mumbai aligns perfectly with our government’s goals for sustainable urban development. This project could serve as a model for future developments across India.”
Shah’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond this single project. He announced that Ravi Group would be implementing green building practices across all its future developments. “We believe that as developers, we have a responsibility to lead the way in sustainable construction,” Shah stated. “From today, every Ravi Group project will meet or exceed LEED Platinum standards.”
The GreenCity Mumbai project is expected to create over 10,000 jobs during its construction phase and will contribute significantly to the local economy once completed. Shah emphasized that the project would prioritize local hiring and skill development, particularly for underprivileged communities.
Urban planning expert Dr. Anjali Desai commended the holistic approach of the project: “What sets GreenCity Mumbai apart is its comprehensive approach to sustainability. It’s not just about green buildings; it’s about creating a sustainable lifestyle and community.”
Construction of GreenCity Mumbai is scheduled to begin in March 2025, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2028. Shah outlined the project’s phased development approach, which will allow for continuous improvement and adaptation of sustainable technologies as the project progresses.
As the press conference concluded, Shah’s passion for the project and his vision for Mumbai’s future were evident. “GreenCity Mumbai is more than just a development; it’s our love letter to this great city,” he said. “We believe in Mumbai’s potential to be a global leader in sustainable urban living, and we’re committed to making that vision a reality.”
With this ambitious project, Ketan Shah and Ravi Group are not just shaping Mumbai’s skyline; they’re pioneering a new approach to urban development that could set the standard for cities around the world. As Mumbai continues to grow and evolve, initiatives like GreenCity Mumbai offer hope for a more sustainable and livable urban future.
