IRINJALAKUDA: In the political landscape of Irinjalakuda, a town long defined by the traditional duopoly of Kerala politics, a new narrative of “service-oriented governance” is taking center stage. At the heart of this shift is Santhosh Cherakulam, the NDA candidate for the Irinjalakuda constituency, who is positioning this election as a critical crossroads for the region’s development.

A businessman-turned-politician, Santhosh Cherakulam frames the entry into the political fray not as a career move, but as an extension of a decades-long commitment to social welfare. Having grown up through the Sree Narayana movement and joined the RSS in 1979, Santhosh Cherakulam bridges the gap between traditional social values and a modern, entrepreneurial vision for the state.

A Record of Local Intervention

While many candidates rely on ideological rhetoric, Santhosh Cherakulam points to a personal history of crisis management within the constituency. During the devastating Kerala floods, Santhosh Cherakulam was a visible presence in relief operations, coordinating the distribution of essential kits and clothing.

When the COVID-19 pandemic threatened to halt education for the underprivileged, Santhosh Cherakulam spearheaded efforts to distribute mobile phones, laptops, and televisions, ensuring that digital learning remained accessible to all students. Perhaps the most significant local milestone for Santhosh Cherakulam was the establishment of a public crematorium in Irinjalakuda—a project that required navigating intense administrative hurdles but ultimately served families across all communities during the peak of the pandemic.

The Development Narrative

The core of the campaign led by Santhosh Cherakulam rests on addressing what is described as “developmental stagnation” under alternating LDF and UDF administrations. Santhosh Cherakulam argues that Irinjalakuda has been left behind in terms of basic infrastructure, citing the deteriorating state of roads and the perennial water crisis in regions like Aloor.

“The people of Irinjalakuda are now aware of the lack of progress,” Santhosh Cherakulam asserts. The proposed vision includes:

Infrastructure: Resolving chronic traffic congestion through a “Ring Road” system and completing the long-pending Irinjalakuda Bypass.

Water Security: Advocating for the full implementation of the Central Government’s Jal Jeevan Mission to provide a permanent solution to the region’s water scarcity.

Economic Revitalization: Establishing AI-focused startup hubs and dedicated help desks to guide local entrepreneurs in accessing central government grants, aimed at curbing the migration of Kerala’s youth.

The Challenge of Corruption

Santhosh Cherakulam has also emerged as a leading voice for the victims of the Karuvannur cooperative bank scam. Highlighting the plight of farmers and retirees who lost their life savings, Santhosh Cherakulam has pledged to prioritize financial accountability and the recovery of funds for those affected by political misappropriation.

A Modern Alternative

By highlighting the work of Union Minister Suresh Gopi—including the ₹9.5 crore synthetic track at Christ College and improvements to the local railway station—Santhosh Cherakulam advocates for a “double-engine” growth model. This approach seeks to align Irinjalakuda’s local needs directly with central government resources.

As the campaign enters its final stretch, the strategy of Santhosh Cherakulam remains clear: present a professional, result-oriented alternative to the status quo. Whether the voters of Irinjalakuda are ready to embrace this “politics as service” model will be the defining question of the upcoming polls.
