The evolution of education in the last few decades has brought to light one question that seeks attention: Should Gau-Sahitya, the literature and wisdom in connection with indigenous cows and their sacred place in Indian culture, be a part of school textbooks? Just adding content is not enough; it is essential to reconnect young minds with a significant part of their heritage that slowly lost its charm and eventually faded from the formal education system.

In the socio-cultural environment of India, the cow is a living icon of community, sustainability, and balance. From villages situated in the rural heartland of India to urban homes, the cow influenced health, kheti, festivals, and day-to-day life. Yet the modern-day textbooks often overlook this legacy of India. Venugopal Naidu Puvvada, Trustee and National Coordinator, Rashtriya Gau Sevak Sangh (RGSS), questions the consequences of their negligence and challenges us to rethink what lessons we give to our children.

Why has Gau-Sahitya (Cow Literature) been absent from our school curricula? Was it an overemphasis on Western education models of the misconception that Gau-Sahitya is solely religious or spiritual, and lacks scientific merits? It’s the right time to focus on cow literature, as excluding it may mean losing touch with our cultural and ecological roots.

Gau-Sahitya retains the wisdom of generations that encompasses folk stories, poems, and life lessons that showcase a deep bond with nature and the village. This living tradition comprises the use of cow dung in natural farming, the applicability of Panchgavya in health practices, and cow urine in Ayurveda. Highlighting modern applications, Venugopal Naidu Puvvada said, “Developing the right structure for Gau-Aadharit Arthvyavastha is crucial. When rural citizens will focus on production, marketing, and sales of sustainable products such as Gauneel, Agarbatti (Incense Sticks), Natural Shampoo, Toothpaste, Floor Cleaner, Cow Dung Idols, Herbal Pesticide Spray, A2 Ghee-based Balm, Eco-friendly Paints, etc, they will be able to lift up their economic conditions and make their business sustainable.”

Venugopal Naidu Puvvada further added that education is incomplete without a sense of identity. Children who grow up without being familiar with their Mitti and just have knowledge of modern technology and global aspects become disconnected from their roots. Gau-Sahitya can play the role of a filler by offering knowledge and stories that are not only relevant but also engaging. According to him, the value of Cow Literature can’t be left behind in a world where environmental issues are causing harm.

Connecting the dots, Narendra Kumar, Founder of Rashtriya Gau Sevak Sangh, remarked, “The question raised is larger than textbooks. Integration of Gau-Sahitya in courses is about the kind of education we want for our children. I believe education must connect the children with their history, environment, and identity. If children can learn about global tech, physics, mathematics, and chemistry, they should also learn about the sustainable knowledge wrapped in Gau-Sahitya and gain insights into the potential of Gau-Aadharit Arthvyavastha. It’s time to give this wisdom its rightful place in classrooms as living knowledge, not as folklore. The RGSS team is determined to raise this matter in front of the government officials and come up with the right solution.” Venugopal Naidu Puvvada points out that cow literature can’t be ignored under the pretext of neutrality. He says that the significance of cows is not confined to any religion. As Venugopal Naidu Puvvada urges Gau-Sahitya Inclusion, is a major change in store in the coming years?
