Katni, June 6, 2025: The Katni Youth Advocates’ Association has submitted a formal memorandum to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Jabalpur, raising serious concerns about ongoing illegal activities at Katni Main Railway Station, Katni South, and Mudwara stations.
As per the memorandum, unauthorized vendors and some individuals are illegally selling food items, intoxicating substances, and even flammable liquids inside trains. It was reported that in several instances, substances like liquor and toxic materials were being transported hidden in milk bottles, dangerously hanging from train compartments. These activities not only threaten passenger safety but also disrupt the overall order and security within railway premises.
Additionally, illegal vendors have been seen selling tea, snacks, and other items near ticket collectors’ compartments and throughout the railway stations without any regulatory permission. Such actions have reportedly led to incidents of harassment, especially involving women, and cases of passengers being drugged and robbed. These activities are clear violations of Section 144 of the Indian Railways Act, 1989.
Under Section 175 of the same Act, any act of negligence or reckless behavior in public spaces that endangers human life is punishable by up to two years of imprisonment and a fine of ₹1000.
The advocates also highlighted a disturbing trend wherein ticket inspectors forcibly deboard students, lawyers, and passengers at arbitrary stations, putting their lives and property at serious risk.
The Youth Advocates’ Association warned that if no appropriate action is taken within 90 days, they will be compelled to file a writ petition in court against the railway administration, and the full responsibility will lie with the concerned authorities.
This memorandum was submitted in the presence of senior advocates Akshay Bajaj, Sumit Yadav, Anurag Gupta, and Mangaljit Singh Bhatti. All of them were present and supported the demands raised.
All eyes are now on the railway administration to see how it responds to these grave concerns.
