Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 27:  Abhijeet Rane, Founder-General of Dhadak Imarat and Bandhkam Kamgar Union, has urged the government to ensure dignified living conditions for construction workers in India. Despite legal provisions, the living conditions of these workers are not just severely lacking but abject, highlighting the need for immediate attention.

India’s construction sector is booming, with numerous residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects underway. However, the workers behind these projects often go unnoticed, facing poor living conditions, inadequate sanitation, and limited access to healthcare.

The Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act emphasizes the need for proper living conditions, but the reality on the ground is far from satisfactory. Abhijeet Rane, a renowned union leader, has appealed to the government to take concrete steps to address this issue.

“Dhadak Imarat and Bandhkam Kamgar Union has been fighting for the rights of construction workers for years,” said Abhijeet Rane. “Over the years, we have seen the really sorry living conditions of construction workers that are hazardous for their health and safety. We urge the government to ensure that these workers get the dignity they deserve. It’s time for us to come together and make a difference in their lives.”

The union feels that laws alone are not enough to ensure hygienic and dignified living conditions to workers, and therefore provisions for punitive actions against those who fail to provide amenities as listed down by the law are also necessary. They also suggest that construction sites of government projects could take the lead by making such amenities available to workers on their sites.

About Dhadak Imarat and Bandhkam Kamgar Union
Dhadak Imarat and Bandhkam Kamgar Union is a city-based organization that has been working tirelessly for the rights of construction workers. With a strong presence in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, the union has been fighting for better living conditions, fair wages, and social security for these workers.
