Mumbai, 1st December 2024: The Indian Institute of Martial Arts (IIMA) proudly hosted the Martial Arts Championship 2024 at AFAC High School, Chembur, Mumbai. The event was a celebration of skill, discipline, and tradition, bringing together martial arts enthusiasts from Mumbai, New Mumbai including nearby areas like Uran and Panvel.
A Unique Competition with Diverse Events
The championship stood out for its inclusion of categories such as Indian Traditional Weapons and Karate Weapons alongside traditional Kata and Kumite events. Participants showcased their dedication and expertise, reflecting India’s rich martial arts heritage. The day concluded with a prize distribution ceremony where medals and team trophies were awarded, adding to the excitement and sense of accomplishment for participants.
Parents in attendance expressed immense pride in their children’s participation in this prestigious championship. Teams, coaches, and students found renewed motivation through the recognition and opportunities provided by the event.
Esteemed Leadership and Mentorship
The event was led by Acharya Ravindra Manjrekar, President and Chief Instructor of IIMA, who has dedicated over 40 years to martial arts and preserving ancient Indian combat techniques. His leadership since founding IIMA in 1986 has been instrumental in fostering the growth of traditional martial arts.
Accompanying him was Mahesh Atale, an expert in Mallakhamb and a mentor to numerous national and international athletes. His presence inspired the participants and underscored the importance of discipline and perseverance in achieving excellence.
Distinguished Guests and Encouragement
The event was honored by the presence of Prop. Adv. Ishwarlal S. Agarwal, an esteemed advocate practicing in the High Court and Supreme Court of India and a renowned author of law books. His words inspired participants, emphasizing the importance of dedication and excellence in their craft. The occasion was further graced by Senior BJP Leader Mr. Gurunath Mithbavkar.
The event also saw distinguished guests such as Sensei Yatish Bangera, the Director of Bombay Judo Club. A highly respected figure in the martial arts community, Sensei Bangera holds a 7th Degree Black Belt from the Judo Federation of India and the International Judo Federation. As an International Referee, he has officiated at numerous prestigious international judo tournaments.
Additionally, corporate leaders Mr. Anil Pandey and Mr. Vaibhav Goyal added to the event’s significance with their presence, further inspiring participants and emphasizing the importance of perseverance and sportsmanship.
The event received strong support from Mrs. Vidya Balkhande, Trustee of the NGO Maxx Social Welfare Foundation, a distinguished organization committed to empowering individuals and communities through initiatives in self-defense, sports, health, physical education, education and mind sports. The foundation emphasizes holistic well-being, inclusivity, and lifelong learning.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Balkhande highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting traditional Indian martial arts as a crucial step in safeguarding the nation’s rich cultural heritage and ensuring it continues to inspire future generations.

She reiterated the foundation’s continued partnership with IIMA to further promote and sustain these cultural treasures.
